A Collective Feature

What has photography taught you?

In the September 2024 issue of WE ARE Magazine, we'd like to explore the valuable lessons we can learn about life, art, and the wider world from our practice as photographers.

Far beyond the technical aspects, photography can bring unique insights on how we live and work, how we see ourselves, and how we interact with others.

In a collective feature called "One Thing I Know", we're inviting Women in Photography members to each share one lesson learned through photography, irrespective of genre or experience. It needn’t be long – you only have 1,000 characters! – but it should be meaningful to you. Take a look at the example on this page (see "Taking Time") to get an idea.

If enough submissions are received, we will publish them in the magazine and share them online.

Taking Time:

As a fine art photographer, I’ve learned the value of putting some distance between me and my work to create a better end result. After making some new photos, I might look at them once in Lightroom, but then I often take a few days – sometimes weeks – before I return to them and decide what works and how to edit the selection.

In that time, my view of a project has evolved and I often have a more objective perspective than I did when I pressed the shutter. I also see things in the images I may have missed earlier.

I feel that this approach allows me to make more informed choices about my images and ultimately deeper, more thoughtful work. It is a major contrast with my old career as a journalist when speed was often a top priority — Rachel Nixon.
