Winners Announcement
Members submitted another stunning collection of images to the Landscape Group competition between the 1st and the 23rd of July 2021.
1st Place
Last Leaves By Simon Turnbull FRPS
The wonderful Borrrowdale Valley (Lake District) is a place close to my heart, having grown up in nearby Keswick. It’s a truly magical corner of the world. I took this image one Autumn hoping for the area's usual splendid colours but was thwarted by a recent storm which had swept away nearly every leaf left in the valley. “Last Leaves” felt like an appropriate title. Thankfully a few golden leaves remained and a fairly typical Lake District “claggy” day made for an excellent backdrop with the distant fells, the silver birch striking an elegant pose within the scene. I do enjoy these quiet, understated images and was very grateful to have been there to take the shot.

- This gentle landscape captures the subtle palette both of early/late light and the autumnal tints of the countryside. The tree is sufficiently bold (1/3) of the image to act as a an immediate focal point and yet not so large that it obscures the context of the landscape in which it lives. There is detail throughout the image even within the misty areas and the sky has a suggestion of clouds. An image to keep returning to, something new each time one looks at it.

- I chose Five trees Iceland first, because I loved the minimalist aspect of the image. The delicate tree lines and soft colour.
- Five Trees, Iceland is, like the title, an intriguing example of minimalist expressionism (and, failing that, I love anything Iceland).
- Stark, well composed, almost minimalist, yet enchanting.

- I thought the limited colour palette and timing of the shot gave the image a fabulous sense of atmosphere.
- Lovely layering with the hills and valleys give the image a great depth.
- Detail on temple in the mist made it no 1. Love the composition of 5 trees in Iceland. A little brighter and it would have been no 1.
- A wonderful ethereal quality with subtle colour and a beautiful layered composition.
- Temple in mist appeals to me because it is one of those images you can look at again and again and discover something new about it. It is delicate with wonderful outlines of the mountains beyond. A lovely image.
How the competition works
- Landscape Members email their image.
- Images are displayed on RPS Landscape group’s website.
- In the last week of the month, Members are sent a link to a voting form and invited to vote for their favourite 3 images.
- The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners are announced on the 1st of the month and can be seen on the Landscape Group competition web page.
- The Prize - the 1st place winner will get to choose one of fotoVUE's photo-location guidebooks.
- At the end of year all 1st place images will be entered into a further round in the competition and Landscape photographer, Thomas Heaton will select an overall winner for 2021!
