Landscape Group Members submitted another stunning collection of images to the Landscape Group competition during July 2023.
1st Place
On the Beach by Ashley Franklin ARPS
It was the end of May and on my inaugural visit to Scotland (as a photographer), this was my first sight ever of Luskentyre Bay on the Isle of Harris. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. ‘Am I hallucinating?’ I thought, ‘or have I come to the Caribbean?’ It wasn’t just the turquoise of the waters; it was the creamy white of the sands, plus other colours that entranced the eye. Me and my photo pals had just arrived on the isle after coming off the ferry and, after parking our vehicle by the side of the road and walking just a few yards to the nearest viewing point, we realised we were in a perfect spot overlooking the bay.
It's at moments like this that you can become intoxicated by the exuberance of the moment, and sure enough, I impulsively fired off a round of shots. However, stimulation soon turned into serenity as we continued to survey the scene and sense the silence. I then sought out the potential of an abstracted landscape, and after some roaming of the camera and zooming of the lens, I filled the frame with a vista of shore and sea. I pressed the shutter more calmly this time but then paused, having espied two figures walking across the beach. I waited until they reached a point in the thirds of my frame, and then pressed the shutter and sighed with some satisfaction. Those figures were a tiny but crucial presence, especially in giving the image a sense of scale and grounding this fantastical scene in reality.

How To Enter
RPS Landscape Group members may submit one jpg image, per month. Before submitting, please resize your image to 2000px wide.
Members are able to add their own image on the monthly competition page by clicking on the 'Add Photo'. After loading the image please add the title and your name and do include your RPS distinction.
Winners and runners up will have their images displayed on RPS Landscape website, Facebook the Newsletter and Instagram
All Landscape Group members will be invited to vote and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed winners will be announced on the RPS Landscape Group website and RPS Landscape Group's Social Media on the 1st of the month.
Open for entries 1st to 23rd.
Voting takes place 24th to 28th.
