Young Carers - A Life in Focus

RPS Gallery | 21st December 2022 - 21st January 2023

Young Carers - A Life in Focus showcases the work of Young Carers across the UK, showing what they feel makes them unique and telling stories of things most important to them. Their experiences and interests come together to highlight the day to day lives of young people outside of their caring roles and gives them a platform to learn new skills and celebrate their creativity

Young Carers have an immense responsibility, often looking after one of their parents, or perhaps someone else in their family. It can be a big responsibility at a young age that comes with a great sense of pride and admiration – however may sometimes come with feelings of loneliness, and stress. That’s why it’s important they take time out for themselves to do something fun for their own mental health and wellbeing.

Photography can be a great way of sharing thoughts and emotions, capturing snapshots of interests and experiences, and showing the things that make everyone unique. Through a series of exciting, playful workshops with professional photographer Jo Bradford, and a series of video interviews with renowned photographic artists, Young Carers have been learning tips and tricks to produce their own amazing images using anything from a mobile phone to the camera on a laptop.

Life in Focus - Stories from the Exhibitors

As part of the exhibition we spoke to young people involved in the project, to tell us the stories behind their photographs and shine a light on their day to day lives as Young Carers.

In this video we hear from Jacob, Josie, Ruby, Angela and Ethan.

Following the success of the project and exhibition, Young Carers: A Life in Focus continues to reach Young Carer communities across the UK. Our education team recently took the exhibition to the Young Carers festival in Botley and ran a fun photography workshop where young people could learn new photography skills and capture the excitement of the day.

This month see’s the exhibition travel to another Young Carers festival, this time in Wales, where it will be displayed alongside ongoing photography activities, creative workshops, and events as part of an exciting festival programme.

Festival Coordinator Melanie Rees writes:

“This year sees the second Wales Young Carers' Festival being held at the Builth Wells Showground - home to The Royal Welsh Show! The festival attracts over 300 young carers aged 11-18 from all the Welsh counties, giving them a much-needed break from their caring role, a chance to relax and have fun and importantly, to meet other young carers and make new friends.”

Life in Focus goes to The Young Carers Festival 2023

This year the RPS education team attended The Young Carers festival, which run's every year organised by The Childrens Society. Our team ran a Photography Lucky dip where Young people choose prompts and were encouraged to explore the festival to photograph their subjects.

The Young Carers Festival (YCF) is the biggest gathering of young carers’ in the world. It is an annual must-attend event for young carers to have fun, unwind, make new friends and try new things. It's also a political platform for young carers to be heard and influence change.
Event highlights include, fairground rides, live music, outdoor movies, fireworks and the legendary silent disco!
The impact of young carers coming together in this way has created a powerful and united voice about the issues they face and has provided a political platform to influence and inform national and local policy.

About The Project...

Young Carers - A Life in focus was made in partnership with Action for Children

Through a series of Online Workshops and resources, that launched in May 2022, Young Carers accross the UK have been invited to learn new photography skills that allow them to photograph their interests and individuality with anything from a smartphone to the camera on a laptop.

The workshops covered all aspects of photography from composition and lighting to storytelling and editing. Artist interviews, from renowned photographers working with smartphones, were also dispersed between the workshops as inspiration for subject matter.
