Distinctions

New Programme for 2027

The Royal Photographic Society has recognised achievement in photography for more than 130 years. Over that time, RPS Distinctions have evolved alongside photography itself, responding to changes in photographic practice, technology and the ways photographers develop and present their work.

Following the pause to Distinctions assessments in 2026, we have been developing the next stage of the programme. The RPS Distinctions Programme will begin its next chapter in 2027, combining rigorous standards with stronger opportunities for learning and development, clearer guidance for applicants, and fair and consistent assessment.

The programme recognises the breadth of contemporary photographic practice and the different ways photographers can demonstrate achievement. It introduces a clearer and more supportive applicant pathway, bringing together guidance, tutorials, submission and assessment as connected parts of the Distinctions experience. This will give applicants greater clarity about what is expected, while supporting them to develop their practice and make informed decisions about their work before assessment.

This is the first in a series of updates about Distinctions in 2027. Further information will be published over the coming months, including assessment dates, fees and application arrangements.

If you were preparing for a Distinction before the pause, your previous work and preparation remain valuable. We will contact applicants affected by the pause with further information about next steps.

What are RPS Distinctions?

RPS Distinctions recognise achievement in photography while supporting continued photographic development. They recognise progressive levels of achievement through Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship. Each Distinction represents a significant achievement in its own right, with opportunities to progress to the next level.

Distinctions can be pursued through two routes: Photographic Practice and Research. The requirements of each route reflect the different ways photographic achievement can be demonstrated at each level. Together, the three levels provide clear progression for photographers seeking to develop their practice, pursue their ambitions and have their achievement recognised by the RPS.
