I’ve had a camera around my neck for over fifty years now but it was only once I retired that I became serious about my photography.

In 2017 I gained my Licentiateship (LRPS) and in 2020 I achieved my ARPS (applied). Both distinctions benefitting greatly from attending advisory days.

I have just finished an MA in Photography with Falmouth University.

Regional Treasurer

After leaving Bath University I qualified as an accountant and spent many years working as an accountant and auditor for an accountancy practice in Somerset. In later years I joined some of my colleagues managing the finances and business enterprises of a prominent West Country family.

I have been interested in photography since the age of eleven when I had my first ‘box Brownie’ camera. On retirement this interest was rekindled, first by joining various photography groups through the U3A, this then lead me to doing the RPS/Open University Certificate in Photography, which is how I came in contact with the RPS.

I achieved my LRPS distinction in March 2024. I was the very last person to gain a licentiate with prints as from April all LRPS submissions will be digital. I am now thinking about my ARPS Distinction.

Secretary

I took up photography seriously in the early eighties when living in the USA with small children. Enforced domesticity did not suit me at all, and the camera became a lifeline! A teacher and educational adviser all my working life, I have always enjoyed the arts and sports; with a camera I can explore both these to my heart’s content, and my natural curiosity about people has led to a fascination for street photography and portraiture.

I seem to have “committee” stamped on my forehead, and as Chair of a local Camera Club, long serving PCC Secretary, as well as having served as Membership Secretary of AAIA, a National Assessment Association, for many years before I finally retired, I feel well qualified to take on the role of Secretary here. It always feels good to give something back whilst broadening my horizons!

Regional Web Editor

With a lifelong passion for photography, I have enjoyed spending time outdoors with my camera for as long as I can remember. Since joining the RPS in 2019, I have taken part in many in-person and online workshops and found inspiration through the varied programme of online talks.

I’m excited to join the Western Region committee as Web Editor to share our local events and connect with other photographers in the region.

Western Distinctions

My interest in photography spans many years but I only started to take things seriously in 2013. Since then I have found that there is always plenty to learn; listening to speakers, attending courses and entering club competitions have all contributed to my development. All of this, coupled with the excitement of taking to the streets, spending time in the country or visiting the coast have ensured a fulfilling but sometimes frustrating hobby. Thanks to the support of a Western Region member I am now actively working towards my LRPS.

When asked if I would be interested in joining the committee as the Distinctions Coordinator I was initially hesitant, given that I have not yet achieved this qualification. After some thought I realised that my own journey has prepared me well for the requirements of the role. I am excited by this opportunity and look forward to being able to contribute to the future work and growth of our Region.

Committee Member Without Portfolio

I have loved the experience of capturing a moment ever since my teens, that passion has not diminished over the years as I have transitioned from my treasured Praktica MTL3 given to me for my 13th birthday to my latest digital cameras, it’s a thrill to see the image emerge whether in a darkroom tray or on screen. This passion led me to join the RPS in 2023 reaching out and meeting like-minded people to share the experience of image making both online and out and about. I have, as I am sure we all do, an image making device at my side all the time.

I am currently working on my LRPS portfolio and finding the experience a challenging, but fulfilling one.
In the short time I have been with the RPS I have found the region to be a treasure trove of information and advice from the knowledgeable members; and as such it is a privilege to be part of the committee supporting in making the region accessible to all through a diverse range of events and activities.
