"Now't Doing 1926"

“Now’t Doing 1926" is a photographic project reflecting on the 1926 General Strike in Yorkshire.

*Call for Photographers*

The 1926 General Strike started at one minute to midnight on 3 May 1926. To mark the centenary of this event, the Royal Photographic Society Yorkshire Region is announcing - at one minute to midnight on 3 May 2026 - a collaborative photography project exploring the legacy of industry, labour, and community in Yorkshire. This will focus on key locations such as former coalfields, rail hubs, industrial cities, and ports, alongside contemporary portraits connected to today’s trade union movement.

Combining historical research with creative interpretation, the “Now’t Doing 1926” project aims to produce a rich visual response to this pivotal moment in British social history while capturing its continuing resonance today. RPS members with an interest in documentary, portraiture, or place-based work photography are invited to express their interest in taking part in this RPS Yorkshire Region project. Please write to Ed Bylina, RPS Yorkshire Regional Organiser at yorkshirechair@rps.org and we’ll arrange an online briefing for all those taking part.

If you are not already an RPS member, and you would like to take part in this project, you are welcome to join the RPS. Please send an email to Ed Bylina and he will be able to provide you with the necessary details.
