"A fine selection of entries with good quality and interesting images. It's always difficult making the final decision on the winning image, and this month was no exception with several strong contenders. Common to all those selected was that strong sense of place which distinguishes travel photography from other genres."

Winning Image: Southwold, Suffolk and the County of Big Skies - Allan Hartley
"The sight of the big Suffolk sky and the sandy waves of the North Sea landing on the empty beach assure the sense of place is clear. The town buildings, including the lighthouse, are captured effectively in profile above the beach while also reminding us of their colourful exteriors. The groynes are well placed to add interest to the foreground and break up the sea. A nicely balanced composition."

"Monochrome works for this exciting image, focussing our attention on the racing horses which are pin sharp against the slightly blurred background of spectators. From everything we see in this image, sense of place is clear."

Tibetan Barley Harvester - Neil Harris
"Sense of place is strong, from the costume of the eponymous harvester and the traditional methods she deploys. All this is emphasised by the background where other similar workers busy themselves in the field. Again, differential focus helps us concentrate on the main subject without being distracted by the others who nevertheless have an important role to play."

Zwieselalm - Catherine Phillips
"This image captures the clarity and purity associated with the Alps. In this case, strong differential focus isn't needed with the bright colours of the flowers assuring that they stand out against the stark and grey rocky mountains behind, while the grey fencing on which they stand blends in so as not to distract. Again, a nice composition."

"This exudes fun and exudes Caribbean, with the beaming face of the coconut seller with cleaver poised and coconut in hand, all backed by the surrounding bright colours in bright sunshine."
