Travel Image of the Month - October 2021 : Drinking at the Waterhole, Botswana - Bob Chiu
Our judge for this month, Justin Cliffe ARPS commented;
"A smaller selection of images to review this month, but some very nice ones there for our consideration. After suitable thought and reflection, I have picked, as my Image of the Month for October:
Drinking at the waterhole, Botswana - Bob Chiu.
"Little doubt as to where we are with this image, somewhere in Southern Africa, as evidenced by the title. We have some beautiful light which really draws us to this photograph and then, when we get there, the lovely diagonal line of zebras - and their reflections, leading us through the scene. A really nice image."
I also have three Highly Commended images which are, in no particular order:
Chicken Man - Jane Tearle
"The man in this photo has an intense stare at the photographer, and therefore the viewer - it certainly has impact. The black interior of the doorway behind him helps accentuate his face and the two chickens at his feet gives us some sense as to what he does. A strong portrait image which tells a story about this man."
Vietnam Schoolgirls - Steve Jones
"There are some lovely images of children this month however this one is made, for me, by expression on the little girl’s face as she excitedly tells her friends something. There’s some haze or mist in the background - and the hint what could be a figure (but I don’t think is) in the right hand doorway which adds a sense of mystery. Delightful."
Guard, Mohammed V Mausoleum, Rabat - Sue Hutton
"This image which works well, with the small figure of the guard nicely placed in the bottom left of the frame. Very simple colour pallette, with just his red uniform providing a nice contrast. If I was to make one, minor, suggestion, it would be to have moved a step to the right so that the guard would have been in the middle of the arch, rather than close up against the left pillar. That said, a pleasing photograph with a good sense of place."
• Congratulations then to Bob, his winning shot will be added to the Travel Image of the Month page on the website, with the overall monthly winners competing to be the Group’s best travel photograph of the year.
