Solicitor General, and MP for Lewisham West and East Dulwich in London, Ellie Reeves was born and bred within her constituency. She has been a member of the Labour Party all her voting life, and has campaigned ceaselessly for social justice, public services and equality. An employment rights lawyer for over 10 years, she ultimately set up her own business providing help to working mums and women facing maternity discrimination.
Before meeting, I had asked Ellie to choose a location for our shoot which meant something personal to her, and her reply was quick and clear: ‘The Horniman Museum is an iconic part of my constituency and I love going there with my family.’
It was a bleak, grey, rainy morning when we met at The Horniman Museum for a 30-minute shoot. Knowing how time-pressured the shoot was likely to be, I had reconnoitred the Museum an hour beforehand, quickly short-listing in my mind possible locations which were not crowded, where the light was not too gloomy, where the background was recognisably ‘Horniman’.
Anxious about all these uncontrollable variables, it was a huge relief when Ellie arrived with such warmth of greeting, a smile which brightened the whole day, and the confession that she hates having her photograph taken! We quickly got into a cheerful, collaborative mood, however, in none of my pre-shoot research had I registered that Ellie is in fact a good 10cms taller than me! To avoid it appearing that she might be ‘looking down her nose’ at the viewer, I stood precariously on a chair, with the Museum’s Press Secretary guarding me from falling, to everyone’s great amusement.
I hope Ellie feels that this portrait we made together shows her as the warm, bright, approachable human being I saw – absolutely someone you would want to have in your corner.
