RPS members find a fresh perspective on landscape

Outdoor exhibition takes photography out of the gallery and into people's lives, says Howard Klein LRPS

Take a stroll through the British isles and beyond as the RPS Landscape Group Members’ Outdoor Exhibition tours to external locations across the UK.

Following a successful inaugural show in 2022 the photography exhibition is back, this time with eight pitstops and almost 30m of images to discover.

The exhibition of 80 prints by RPS Landscape Group members from around the world captures land and seascapes, rural and urban scenes, and everything from grand vistas to intimate abstracts. Launching at Southwark Cathedral, London, on 17 May, the exhibition will travel to Bristol, Nottingham, York, Chester, Keswick and Inverness, with more locations to be added for spring 2026.

The show is again designed to invite curious passersby to appreciate the landscapes spontaneously, says organiser Howard Klein LRPS. “This exhibition hits the spot – 98% of the people who see it hadn’t realised it was there. It’s pure serendipity.”

Klein, who achieved his Licentiate Distinction during the pandemic, views the exhibition as an opportunity for members to showcase their work in a real-world setting. The result, he says, is an interactive and inspiring experience that engages a wider audience than a traditional gallery setting might – including those who may not typically seek out or connect with photography.

“We’re carrying out the RPS mission to bring inspiration, creativity and connection through photography to people of all ages and backgrounds,” says Klein, referring to the Society’s ambitions to make image-making accessible to everyone.

This year’s exhibition will push the definition of landscape and include a broader range of photographic techniques.

“You’ll see a smaller proportion of traditional landscape landscapes,” says Klein. “More ICM [intentional camera movement], a few infrareds, more black-and-white. More air, you know, just to break it up and show that landscape is not just simply going out into woodland or shooting waves.”

Klein, who is Exhibitions and Member-led Events Manager for the Landscape Group, wants the exhibition to stop its audience in its tracks. “The world is flooded with images,” he says. “On average each gets eight seconds, if that. I’ve got photographs of people at this exhibition spending time looking at an image and being inspired or just simply enjoying it.”
