RPS Scotland

The RPS Scotland Region is geographically the largest region in the RPS and supports over 700 RPS members. We aim to offer both regional and local events to engage with members across the whole Region.

Currently our key offerings include Distinction Advisory Days, Local Photoforums, and Share and Support Days. We curate an annual print exhibition to showcase members work which is shown at venues throughout the region. In addition, we acknowledge the achievements of our members at an annual Celebration of Distinctions where successful members are invited to show and talk about their work.  We have a team of Local Area Representatives who are encouraged to organise local meetings and outings support members who may not wish to travel to more distant locations.

Overall, our emphasis is on enjoying the photography and providing the opportunity to meet up with other members to increase our knowledge and understanding.

We did start off 2026 with our very excellent Labhairt Beag…big thanks to all those who contributed, and it’ll soon be on the Contemporary YouTube pages.
Talk by Tom Astbury…Dùlchas. Tom has recently retired from his job as an international cameraman, and settled back into life in Dunblane, and volunteering for the Stirling Photography Festival team. His latest project…Dùlchas (it’s a Gaelic term for that feeling of understanding between the land, it’s people, and it’s customs) is based on the works of legendary Gaelic poet Duncan Bàn MacIntyre, and is an elegant selection of monochrome images from around Glen Orchy. It’s sure to be an interesting and evocative evening, 10th February 19.30 GMT

Book Club night, so I’m looking for 6 or so members to talk to us about a book…could be a new one, an old favourite, a revisited classic, a source of inspiration, anything really, for 10 minutes each. As diverse as possible please, 19th March. Let me know to book your presenter spot.
After that we should be going back to face to face stuff, and I was thinking Inverness in April, Perth in May, Glasgow in June,  Edinburgh in August for the Festival, and Stirling in September for their Photography Festival.

Stewart Wall MA ARPS NCTJ - 4 March 7pm - Zines & Photobooks

Stewart Wall MA ARPS NCTJ is a professional photographer, qualified educator, and long-standing contributor to the Royal Photographic Society. His career began in 1978 as a trainee photo-journalist at the Brentwood Gazette, where his first published image was a street photograph — schoolchildren caught in the energy of a snowball fight. That early assignment sparked a lifelong belief that the street is one of photography’s richest stages for documenting real life.

Trained through the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), Stewart went on to work across regional and national press while developing a deep commitment to photographic storytelling, education, and book-making. Within the RPS he has played a significant leadership role: he authored the official criteria for the Photobook genre and served as Chair of Photobook Assessments for two years, helping to establish contemporary standards for narrative photography within the Society. He also chaired and assessed Licentiate applications.

Over the past decade Stewart has become widely recognised for leading collaborative street photography and place-based projects, most notably the long-running Streets in the Sky trilogy (2015–2025), created with photographers at Sheffield’s Park Hill estate. His projects explore the street as a document of lived experience, social memory, and everyday performance.

Today, Stewart’s practice focuses on guiding photographers towards creative street photography projects, from first ideas through to zines and photobooks, using his own methodology which blends emotional mapping, sense of place, and sequenced storytelling.

In this talk, Stewart will share practical strategies for developing meaningful street photography projects, approaches to sequencing and editing for zines and photobooks, and insights from a lifetime spent documenting life as it happens.

Karen At Bos Form
Karen Miller - Wildlife Wednesday 25 March 7pm

Karen Miller is a wildlife photographer based near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. After a career in radio, she left BBC Radio Scotland in 2019 and moved from Glasgow to the Highlands to pursue her love of wildlife and photography — a decision she has never looked back from.

Karen describes herself as a wildlife lover first and a photographer second.

She believes it is a privilege to spend time in the company of our native birds and animals, observing them at ease in their natural environment and learning from their behaviour.

Her photography is guided by patience and respect, with an emphasis on capturing emotive, authentic moments that reflect the essence of the animal rather than staged or stressful encounters.

Mountain hares were one of the key reasons Karen moved to the Highlands, and her deep connection with them led to her being featured in the 2024 short film Finding Bo, which explores her relationship with a special mountain hare and her wider love of wildlife.

Through her work, Karen hopes to encourage a deeper appreciation of Scotland’s wildlife and the importance of ethical, compassionate photography.

Mark Banks 9 April 7pm Printing & Paper Choices

Title: The Art of Choosing Paper

Subtitle: Understanding How Paper Influences the Final Print

Talk Description: Mark’s talk explores how paper choice hugely influences the final printed image and why it plays such an important role in the printing process.

Talk Purpose: By developing an understanding of how different papers behave - rather than relying on formulaic or habitual choices - you will be better equipped to select papers that support your creative intent and help your images translate more successfully from screen to print.

Mark’s Bio: Mark is a professional landscape photographer based in the north east of England. His passion for the subject comes from the love of travel and being outdoors in remote places.

Mark has been teaching landscape photography, post-processing and printing for over 20 years and runs photography workshops around the UK and abroad. Further details about Mark’s workshops can be found at www.markbanksphotography.com.

Camera & Coffee with Omar Shamma - Aberfeldy 9 May

Omar Shamma is a retired business consultant who now lives in the highlands of Perthshire, overlooking the tranquil shores of Loch Tay. His fascination with photography began early, inspired by his father and nurtured through a Kodak Instamatic and long afternoons in his school’s photography club, where he learned to develop and print black-and-white images. As his career progressed, photography became an occasional pursuit, mostly during holidays and travels. His connection with Scotland began in 2007 and gradually deepened; its landscapes, culture, and quiet grandeur drew him back repeatedly.

Isle of Skye Weekend with Simon Dodsworth

Simon Dodsworth ARPS: Growing up in the austere landscape of the Pennines gave Simon an affinity with simple, graphic, composition which has been a major influence on his image making, in both his personal photographic work and art, and he gained his ARPS in 1992 after being encouraged to apply at an RPS workshop by past president of the Society, John Barsdley.

He is interested in capturing a range of subjects but especially landscape, portraits and architecture. His recent move with his partner to the Isle of Skye was driven largely by the inspiration provided by the mountains and coastline of the island.

A highlight of his photographic practice was having Sir Don McCullin selecting 3 of his landscape photographs, making Simon a finalist in the 2023 Marshwood Arts Awards.

A relaxed, inspiring experience for RPS Members. Join us for a two-day photographic journey across the Isle of Skye — one of Scotland’s most dramatic and rewarding landscapes. Designed especially for RPS members, this weekend offers a carefully planned route that makes the most of each day while allowing time at key locations to photograph, explore, and enjoy being on Skye.

Whether you’re travelling from afar or closer to home, the itinerary is thoughtfully paced, flexible, and accessible, with locations chosen for their photographic potential in a wide range of conditions. Google Maps links will be provided, and closer to the event we’ll also share What3Words locations and a few practical tips to make getting around as straightforward as possible.

Why Skye?

Skye offers an extraordinary concentration of photographic opportunities — from reed-fringed lochs and dramaticmountain backdrops to moody coastlines and surreal, otherworldly landforms. It’s a place where grand landscapes meet quieter details, and where even challenging weather can lead to truly compelling images.

Nocturne Weekend with Andrew Allan October

Nocturne Weekend – Night Sky Photography at Garvault House

Step away from the noise, slow the pace, and immerse yourself in darkness that truly glows.

Nocturne is an intimate weekend dedicated to night sky photography, hosted at the beautifully remote Garvault House Hotel in the Scottish Highlands. Led by Andrew Allan – Scotland’s Night Sky, this exclusive experience offers the rare opportunity to photograph under some of the darkest skies in the UK, with expert guidance throughout.

Across two carefully curated days and nights, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Photograph the Milky Way beneath exceptionally dark Highland skies

  • Experience the potential for Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) during your stay

  • Receive hands-on night sky photography guidance in a relaxed, supportive setting

  • Explore daytime photographic opportunities, including local landscapes, flora, fauna, and wildlife

With exclusive use of Garvault House for workshop attendees, numbers are intentionally limited to maintain a calm, immersive atmosphere and plenty of personal support. Comfortable accommodation, excellent food, and time to connect with fellow photographers are all part of the experience.
