Travel Image of the Month - April 2022
Very many thanks to all those who submitted photos for the April competition.
Our judge this month, Justin Clift, made the following remarks.
A nice selection of images this month - after considerable thought and deliberation, my winner for April is:
Winning Image
Havana Cuba, by Jo Kearney ARPS
What makes this photo for me is the figure of the man, in the doorway, peering out at the photographer - but I also like the smiling woman in the foreground. Both are positioned nicely in the frame and the subtle colours add to the sense of decay that one sees on the building. A worthy winner this month.
I also have three Highly Commended images which are, in no particular order:
California Dreams, Santa Monica Pier, by Dan Bronish LRPS
Here the vivid colours in the top half of the photograph draw the viewer’s attention but it’s the three women in the foreground that really lift the image. Good sense of place - re-enforced by the ‘Pacific Park’ logo on the wheel - a perfect time of day and the lovely colour of the evening sky all combine to make this a very pleasing image.
Trastevere Night, Rome, by Anton Panchenkov
Street photography - love it - and this is a nice example of night life on the streets of Trastavere. If I was do do anything with it, I’d darken down the left side of the image, which is the brightest part, especially the window or light(?) at the top, and brighten the right half to draw the viewer’s attention to the main subject of the photo, the embracing couple. But then that’s just my opinion…!
Taj First Thing by Tony Beane
A little different to the usual images that we see of the Taj Mahal - the pre-dawn light really helping here - and the dark shadows creating a sense of mystery. There is the hint of people in the image but the exposure used in making the photograph means that we cannot really see them - nice. Just a minor suggestion - could we crop a little off the top and the two sides and make it more of a portrait format - as there’s not really anything here that add to the image and this would further emphasise the Taj - the focus of our attention in this image.
• The winning shot will be added to the Travel Image of the Month page on the website, with the overall monthly winners competing to be the Group’s best travel photograph of the year.
