Travel Image of the Month - January 2022 : Monastir, Tunisia - Carl Mason

Our judge for this month, Richard Lewis ARPS commented

"Fewer entries this month, but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. Several strong contenders for winning image"

Winning Image :

Monastir, Tunisia  - Carl Mason

"This image exudes a sense of calm appropriate to its subject, resulting in a real sense of place. It is taken from a low angle which helps assure an excellent perspective, emphasised by the feeling of openness and the interesting rhythmic pattern of the ground. It is appropriately formatted and works well in mono."

Highly Commended Images

Coffee Blessing, Kenya remote tribe - Bob Chiu

"A very atmospheric image that captures very well the seriousness of the moment as the two men focus on their devotion. The moody light enhances the image, it is nicely composed and is another that works well in mono."

The Road to a Long Life; Old Lady Carrying Firewood. Haa Valley, Bhutan - Christian Brash

"A nice straightforward shot that captures the sense of place, with the colourful roadside safety sign, the old lady in red bent under the heavy weight of the wood on her back and the car receding into the distance toward the mountains.  They are all nicely positioned, emphasising the perspective which aids this composition."

Collecting Ash from the Darjeeling Train - Barbara Fleming

"A poignant image of the little boy studiously engaged in his task of retrieving the ash from the steam engine.  Another that works well in colour which helps convey the sense of place. That sense is clear from the boy and the locomotive together, emphasised by the escaping steam and the wonderful array of apparently random curved pipework and overall grime."

Sounds of Tallinn - John Riley

"This is a striking image that captures very well the sense of place of old Tallinn, fronted by the human interest of the guitar player, who himself presents a strong and interesting image."

• Our congratulations to Carl for his winning shot which will be added to the Travel Image of the Month page on the website, with the overall monthly winners competing to be the Group’s best travel photograph of the year.
