RPS SOUTH WEST VISUAL ART EVENT
16 NOVEMBER 2024 (10 AM – 4 PM)
WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL
WOODBURY, FLOWER STREET, WOODBURY, EX5 1LX
FEE: £10
The next RPS SW Visual Art Event will take place at Woodbury Village Hall. I am pleased to announce that our speaker on this occasion will be David Townshend FRPS with his presentation entitled “CREATING GOOD IMPRESSIONS”. This will be an opportunity to see how David’s striking impressionist and abstract images interpret the world in a different way, exploring colour and shape, texture and light.
David: “Born and brought up on the Norfolk coast, I have always felt at home in the outdoors. First a birdwatcher, then a scientist in coastal bird ecology, and then a government nature conservation specialist in Northumberland and Devon - I have been drawn to the coast all my life. And when not there, I am in my garden. I took up photography in my teens, but for many decades I was trying to realistically depict what I saw. Then in 2016 I discovered impressionist photography using multiple exposures and intentional camera movement – and I haven’t looked back since. I am now using this approach to create unique images in my own personal style – and having such fun!”
Creating Good Impressions
In his presentation David will share his progression from a one-day Kew workshop with Valda Bailey to winning two major prizes in the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition, gaining his Fellowship and holding three solo exhibitions. He will show how his style has developed since he discovered impressionist photography, with examples of his landscape, plant & garden and architectural projects.
David will show how he explores the natural and man-made elements in a landscape, combining and re-presenting them in unique ways. He will demonstrate how impressionist photography enables you to create fascinating images from ordinary subjects, and how you don’t need to travel far from home to be creative. Through his images he will highlight how he seeks to create a sense of place in his images and encourage you to work in panels and projects.
David will explain how he composes images in the field using in-camera multiple exposures combining layers from that place on that day, later using Lightroom to complete the creative process.
David will illustrate his talk with a generous collection of prints.
The Mill Pond 6 Abandoned Hope
The afternoon will be dedicated to a “Show & Tell” session when all participants are invited to show and talk about their work.

On the 1st July 2023 the South West Visual Art Group was relaunched. At the first meeting Susan Brown FRPS and Andrew Marker FRPS showed their work. The day went well and there was opportunity for members to show there work.
Due to the success of the first meeting other meetings were arranged and below brief details in PDF format of all the speakers are listed.
Vanda Ralevska was the speaker at the 3rd meeting and the following quote is certainly very true. "Vanda has a true passion for landscapes, nature and the outdoors. She is in constant search for those fleeting moments of magic that turn our world into something extraordinary. Vanda finds her inspiration in quiet landscapes and the intimate details that abound in nature. In her images she strives to reflect the atmosphere, feeling, and sheer wonderment that our natural world evokes within us."
