Seeing in Sixes

A mini-project challenge for members — six images, one theme, one cohesive vision.

Introduction & Background

Inspired by Brooks Jensen's LensWork Seeing in Sixes projects, we are offering members the chance to do a small project of six images which will be collected and published as an e-zine.

"I see these small projects as a visual cousin to the haiku or six-word story — a compact expression of a single nature, possibly a story, definitely a theme, held together stylistically, and making a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Tight, distilled to the essentials, impactful, deeper than what is possible with a single image."

— Brooks Jensen, LensWork

Members could use the idea as:

🎯 Stand-alone Challenge

A self-contained creative exercise to sharpen your vision.

📷 Mini Project

A shorter commitment than pulling a distinctions panel together.

🪜 Stepping Stone

A mini panel that could grow toward a distinctions panel.

Celebrating 10 Years

The "Ten" Theme

As part of the celebrations for the 10th Anniversary of the Landscape Group in 2026, any theme is acceptable — provided "ten" appears somewhere in the theme title.

For example: "tents in the landscape"; the figure "10"; Tenby, Tenterden, Pittenweem, Montenegro, fastenings, glistening, off the beaten track…

The images must be accompanied by a short explanation of the work and how it links to your chosen title.

How to Take Part

1

All images must have some clear connection to the chosen title.

2

All images must be photographed during 2026 and must be submitted by midnight on 31st January 2027. The set could come from a single day trip or from multiple visits to the location.

3

A submission must comprise six images, no more and no less, plus a 150-word maximum statement of intent, which must explain the project and how it connects to your title.

4

Image size specification: 2000 px on the long side, JPG at maximum quality, sRGB colour space. All images in the set must be the same orientation.

5

Images must feature landscapes that conform to the definition adopted by the RPS Landscape Group:

"Landscape" photography is defined as the photographic portrayal of all elements of the land, sea and sky whether natural or built or influenced by human endeavour.  Examples include mountains, hills, farmland, coasts, bodies of water, forests and populated and industrial areas. Images may be created using traditional or other techniques (including but not limited to infrared, multiple exposures, intentional camera movement, abstraction, minimalism and post-processing).

6

Images may be taken with traditional or creative techniques, but the connection to the title should be, at least to some extent, recognisable.

7

Images may be processed to a particular style if you wish (e.g. retro, contemporary, pop-art etc).  If you choose a particular style, there should be a rationale for this that relates to the content or title of your project.

8

All images from a single photographer should be photographed, processed and presented in a similar style so as to create a cohesive body of work. The use of AI-generated elements of the image is not acceptable.

9

People who are not confident about producing a set like this might like to consider joining the Landscape Group's Projects Project.
